Horizon Zero Dawn’s PS5 remaster means the aged version is now twice as high-priced

Published:

The game’s recently announced remaster for PS5 Horizon Zero Dawn will arrive next month. And if you already own the OG version on PS4, you can upgrade for just $10. However, if you were considering buying the aged version on PS4 now so that you could pay the petite upgrade fee and save some money on the remaster, well, you’ve waited too long because Sony has doubled the price of the original game so that no one can do it.

On September 24, during the latest State of Play, Sony officially announced Remastered Horizon: Zero Dawnconfirming the rumors and the earlier ESRB leak. This fresh, remastered version of the 2017 post-apocalyptic open world game features newly recorded dialogue and a host of visual improvements. The premiere will take place on October 31 on PS5 and PC and will cost $50. Meanwhile, the original game previously cost only $20 on the PSN store. However, that price has now doubled as Sony makes sure you can’t save money by buying the aged version and taking the cheaper upgrade path.

As he noticed EurogamerSony has quietly doubled the price of the digital version Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4. The 2017 game previously only cost $20, but now it’s $40. It looks like the price was raised on September 25th.

Doing the math, that means if you buy the PS4 version today and then spend $10 to upgrade, you’ll spend $50. So you won’t save any money on this. Now Sony hasn’t officially come out and said, “Oh yes, we’ve doubled the price of the PS4 version Horizon so you can’t save $10. But what’s happening here is pretty obvious, and honestly, it’s kind of stupid.

If people want to buy the game on PS4 first and then upgrade to the PS5 version and save $10, who cares? You’re still making money. Or lower the price of the remaster to $30 so that people don’t save money, but don’t screw over people who want to buy and play a game from seven years ago on their PS4.

Fortunately, you can still find inexpensive used physical copies Horizon Zero Dawn, and Sony has confirmed that if you have this version on disc, you can still upgrade for just $10. You’ll need to keep the drive in your PS5 (and, of course, To have disk drive), but this is still an option. And I don’t think Sony will go around with a sledgehammer and smash every copy Horizon Zero Dawn hang out at GameStops across the country. At least I’m sure they won’t…
