FromSoftware CEO Hidetaka Miyazaki has dreams that go beyond the Souls-Like subgenre with which his name is now synonymous. After pushing the boundaries of what an action RPG can be, it turns out that the only thing he wants to get involved with is a time-honored Japanese RPG.
Miyazaki had a long chat with him Rolling Stone, covering various topics. The most compelling (in our opinion) was a brief fragment in which the author expressed interest in creating a JRPG at some stage, if time and opportunities allow. FromSoftware released one in 2006, Enchanted Arms, although Miyazaki said that if such a thing were to occur, it would likely not be associated with any of the existing IP addresses, with one intriguing exception:
“I don’t think there’s a scenario where I would create the King’s Field myself. The same can be said about Otogi and Enchanted Weapons. I think a lot of these games are so connected to the work of the directors who almost invented this style of game.” The exception to this rule, of course, is the series in which Miyazaki made his bones, and if we are so brave, one that will make for an amazing JRPG setting: “I worked on Armored Core 4 and Armored Core: For Answer. This allowed me to create my own interpretation of Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon and expand on it.”
Time will tell whether this invigorating reality will ever come to pass, but we imagine the studio has its hands full at the moment. The highly anticipated Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree will be released in just a few hours, and we suspect it will be a huge success for the studio.
