Hi-Fi Rush Studio Shut Down by Microsoft, Saved by PUBG Publisher

Krafton, the publisher behind PUBG: Battlegrounds AND Callisto Protocoltook over the Tango Gameworks studio, responsible for The Evil Within and Hi-Fi Fever. Tango was shut down by Microsoft and ZeniMax Media in May, but the talent behind the Tokyo-based studio will be integrated into Krafton, which currently owns the rights to Hi-Fi Fever.

The move from Microsoft to Krafton will not impact Tango’s existing catalog of games, which includes Evil inside, Evil Within 2, Ghostwire: Tokyoand the original Hi-Fi Fever– said the publisher. Hi-Fi Fever is available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.

Tango Gameworks was founded in 2010 by Shinji Mikami. The studio’s first game, Evil insidewas a survival horror game in the style of Mikami’s work at Capcom, where he oversaw survival horror games Resident Evil, Dinosaur CrisisAND Resident Evil 4 as game director. Tango Gameworks became part of the Xbox stable of studios when ZeniMax was acquired by Microsoft in 2021. Mikami left Tango in 2023.

The studio achieved great success thanks to critics Hi-Fi Fever in 2023. The rhythm-action game was a surprise release on Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription and was a distinct departure from the gloomy and violent games Tango Gameworks was known for.

Krafton’s statement comes just days after former Arkane Austin developers who worked on the games Victim AND Disgracedannounced a modern first-person action RPG from its Wolfeye studio.

In May, Microsoft announced it planned to close three studios owned by Bethesda Softworks: Red Fall Arkane Austin Developer, Mighty Doom developer Alpha Dog Studios and Tango Gameworks. The fourth studio, Roundhouse Games, had its employees reassigned to other duties.
