Ghost of Tsushima 2 is confirmed and coming sooner than you think. Sony reveals first look at sequel 2020 open world samurai game during today’s State of Play show. It looks great and is set to release in 2025. It’s also officially called Spirit of Yōtei and the main role is played by a woman.
Set in 1603, the game follows a brand novel character named Atsu as she journeys with her pet wolf to the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei to exact justice, possibly revenge, and all the other cold, wonderful, and bloody things players might remember from the first game. It feels a lot more freeform than the original, which mostly dealt with a land under siege by an alien invader.
Here’s the trailer:
“People come to the North to disappear,” a man says at the beginning of the trailer. He is later killed by a wandering samurai woman who sets out through lush valleys, dense autumn forests, and pretty snowy fields in search of something—though we’re not entirely sure what. The end of the trailer shows the mysterious warrior Atsu looking at Mount Yōtei with his wolf ally, both wielding swords.
“This area was beyond the reach of Japan and was full of vast grassland plains, snowy tundra, and unexpected dangers,” wrote Andrew Goldfarb, communications manager at Sucker Punch on the PlayStation blog after the announcement. “It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans that lived in Tsushima, and it’s a setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell.”
The action takes place hundreds of years after the first game, so it seems Spirit of Yōtei will be a fresh start, offering players the chance to experience a novel cast of characters, betrayals, and, most importantly, a huge novel map. While some fans will no doubt be melancholy to see the protagonist leave Spirit of TsushimaJin Sakai, who is behind it, I hope that the novel installment of the game will give her the opportunity to make bold decisions and try out different types of gameplay.
It will also undoubtedly look amazing on PS5 Pro, which will be a real treat for gamers who were initially skeptical about the pricey novel hardware.
