Guangyun “Guangguang” Chen, Creative Director Marvel Rivalssays that while many players have requested a role queue system, a matchmaking option that helps create balanced teams, there are currently no plans to implement one in the free-to-play character shooter.
This free-to-play third-person shooter was released earlier this month and quickly became one of the biggest games of the year, already hitting over 20 million players. Some of these players are tired of being thrown into matches where their entire team is dueling, forcing them to play a healer or tank to support balance the lineup.
One solution to this problem is a role queue. Found in games like Overwatch 2Role Queue allows players to select a role, such as a tank, and then find a match that needs that specific role. IN Overwatch 2in this case, that means each match involves a tank, two attackers, and two healers. This should lead to more balanced teams, but developers will be left behind Rivals doesn’t seem interested in adding this system to the shooter.
I’m talking to Dot E-sports, Chen said the studio is “not considering a role pipeline at this time.”
“The team’s goal is to offer a wider variety of team compositions through team-building skills and custom designs to enable people to play as Marvel superheroes rather than limiting players to their choice of role.”
Chen went on to explain that match data shows this Rivals currently does not need a role queue system.
While some may be upset that Chen and developer NetEase are taking their time to balance the game or add a role queue system, I’m glad the online multiplayer game studio is stepping back and letting things get a little disordered and messy before jumping in to sort everything out and make everything more fair and sustainable.
One of the reasons I like it Rivals This is because everyone feels powerful and matches rarely play out the same way as almost every character seems viable with the right composition or strategy. And while role queue can be fun in ranked, I hope that if it’s ever added, it won’t mean a shift towards balancing out all the fun Marvel Rivals.
