Here’s how to remove Joy-Cons from Switch 2

A brief, recurring Nintendo video Switch 2 official website includes one little detail that wasn’t included in the reveal: how to remove those fancy novel Joy-Cons from the screen.

Turns out that fat button on the back of the Joy-Cons, located just below the ZR/ZL triggers, is what you press to disconnect the controllers. While we obviously haven’t gotten to the console yet, it feels much more ergonomic than the minuscule buttons that perform the same function on the original Switch.

It’s still unclear how these buttons disable the Joy-Cons. There are rumors that the Joy-Cons connect to the Switch 2 using powerful magnets and sister site Polygon Edge I noticed one cylindrical part of the Joy-Con’s interior pushing outwards in the trailer animation. The Verge speculates that it’s possible that the button will simply be pushed out when the “detach” trigger is pressed to move the Joy-Cons away from the console and weaken the pull of the magnets, allowing the Joy-Cons to be detached. Similarly Joy-Con pin connectors on the Switch 2’s side notches, this can be a worrying failure point in the console’s design, depending on the materials used.
