Helldivers 2 has had its ups and downs since launch, but the modern trailer at The Game Awards is probably one of the most electrifying post-launch events. The modern trailer shows off a combination of electrifying additions: first, a modern enemy faction, the Illuminati, which originally appeared in the first game; second, vehicles that Helldivers can operate to move around battlefields; and third, fighting in an urban environment. This is all part of the modern update, Omens of tyrannywhich looks like it’s going to seriously change the pace of the galaxy-wide war in this online shooter.
Since launch, players have been embroiled in a battle against two factions: the Terminids, a race of giant insect monsters, and the Automatons, an army of deadly robots. So far, the Helldivers have been fighting a war on two fronts. We fought the Terminids, only to create an impenetrable wall of spores in their areas of space. The Automatons have continually been a thorn in Super Earth’s side, and the Democracy Station that players have been working on together is located deep within their territory.
The third faction will only complicate matters further, especially since it appears they are using powerful psychic powers to control the corpses of dead people so they can operate them as an army. The walker shown at the end of the trailer looks particularly disturbing, and I can’t wait to learn how to take down these beasts.
The end of the trailer says the update is now available; after logging in Helldivers 2 I received the following message from Super Earth:
