- Haven – Escape Room game challenges you to get back to the basics
- Just you, peace and lots of puzzles to set you free
- Enjoy a relaxing, yet slightly unnerving game in an extremely popular genre
The escape room genre is one of those straightforward but infinitely variable genres. Escape from a spaceship, escape from a mysterious island, escape from a fantastic dungeon. But sometimes you have to strip it down to the bare essentials. Just you, the room and only your wits to assist you escape, as is the case with the newly released Haven.
As for developer IzumiArtisan, there isn’t much to say about Haven. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. In it you will find yourself in, well, a room. Pale walls, a few pieces of furniture and I have no idea how you got there.
You’ll have to explore every nook and cranny, find clues, and slowly unravel every puzzle standing between you and freedom. Haven isn’t a particularly scary experience, given the calming background music and the distinct lack of looming danger. But that only makes escape seem more urgent.
A place of escape
I think it’s secure to say that the escape room genre doesn’t necessarily have countless variations. Ultimately, there’s a substantial difference between an immersive real-life experience, where props and atmosphere are such a huge asset, and what you can do on a cell phone or computer screen.
I mean, you can go so far as to completely abandon the escape aspect in favor of a cat, but that might be too much for even the most cat-loving puzzle players.
With Haven you have all the necessary features. Simple, believable and realistic localization, a hint system to assist you, mechanics that make you feel immersed, and (best of all) complete freedom to play.
