Harry Potter: Magic Awakenstime is coming to an end and it’s an especially depressed time for Potterheads everywhere. Released in 2021, the popular card-based RPG game became an instant powerhouse, raking in over $228 million in just two months of its launch in China. Despite a promising start for NetEase on iOS and Android, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened will close its doors at Hogwarts in just a few weeks.
On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, NetEase and Portkey Games are discontinuing Harry Potter: Magic Awakened in the following regions: Americas, Europe and Oceania. From then on, the free mobile game will only be playable by iOS and Android users residing in “Asia, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, as well as other select territories in Asia and MENA.”
At the time of writing, NetEase’s justification for shutting down the game in multiple regions is unknown. It’s possible that Warner Brothers will look to scale back its gaming business following the extremely lukewarm response to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which the result was drastically worse than the studio’s expectations. According to her, the game’s performance led to a noticeable 41% decline in revenue for Warner Brothers’ gaming division. Earnings in August report.
If you haven’t downloaded the game to your device yet, it’s unfortunately too overdue to plan a few last-minute sessions with your friends. On Monday, August 26, 2024, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened quietly disappeared from the Google Play and App Stores. It’s not all bad news though, at least for those of you who still have the game installed.

The game’s shutdown is surprising, especially since its PC counterpart was released just over a year ago – although its servers are narrow to Southeast Asia. Ahead of its launch on mobile devices worldwide in July 2023, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened conjured up over a million pre-registrations in China and Taiwan alone, seemingly indicating that Potterhead appetite for the trading card title was powerful.
As a thank you to the game’s community, NetEase states that it “would like to thank people across the Americas, Europe and Oceania for playing the game and is incredibly proud and honored that so many fans around the world have enjoyed Harry Potter: Magic Awakened with with such enthusiasm and passion.”
