How to end the State of Play show? In the case of today’s September 24th broadcast from Playstation, the answer is the reveal of Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima.
It’s set to arrive in 2025, and has the game’s first cinematic trailer, featuring a female ronin protagonist for the first time in the series’ compact history. Someone who clearly has a supple spot for wolves in the same way Jin Sakai couldn’t stop toying with foxes.

The trailer’s description provides some information about the plot, as follows: “In 1603, a new Ghost named Atsu sets out on a journey through the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, an area filled with vast grassland plains, snowy tundra, and unexpected dangers. Ghost of Yōtei will be coming to PS5 in 2025.”
“When we set out to create a new Ghost game,” wrote Andrew Goldfarb, communications manager at Sucker Punch, in an article Blog PS on the announcement: “We wanted to retain the core tenets of Ghost of Tsushima: the ability to play as a wandering warrior in feudal Japan, the freedom to explore at your own pace, and the beauty of the world.”
“We also wanted to continue to innovate. To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond the story of Jin Sakai and the island of Tsushima and instead focused on the idea of the Ghost. At Sucker Punch, we love origin stories and wanted to explore what it might mean to have a new hero wear the Ghost mask and discover a new legend. That led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.”
Goldfarb also added that this is the “first Sucker Punch game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5.” “We have massive sightlines that allow you to see far into the environment, a brand new sky with twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable wind movement on grass and vegetation, and more improvements that we’ll share in the future,” he wrote. “Our new environment also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.”
It’s worth noting that Mount Yōtei is located in the real world of Hokkaido, a northern Japanese island known for, well, snow. Chances are you won’t be snowboarding in this game, but honestly, you never know. Expect Sucker Punch to reveal more details about Ghost of Yotei “in the coming months.”
