On September 24th Sony State of PlaySucker Punch has revealed the long-awaited first trailer for its Spirit of Tsushima sequel. And boy, does it look really pretty.
Spirit of Yōtei is the name of a recently revealed sequel set in a different part of Japan, several hundred years after the events of the first game, and starring Atsu. We don’t know much about the plot, but Sucker Punch made it clear in blog post published after the disclosure that she “wanted to explore what it might mean to have a new protagonist wearing the Spirit mask and discovering a new legend.” The setting, according to the blog post, is 1603, “the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei” in the region of Japan that is now known as Hokkaido. That’s all we really know about the story and world of this sequel.
Looking at the recent 4K trailer released by Sony, it really does seem like Spirit of Yōtei was designed not only to show off the power of the PS5, but also to showcase the newly announced $700 for PS5 Pro. I’m shocked Sony didn’t include this game in the PS5 Pro announcement, even as a miniature teaser to show off something completely recent and amazing looking running on this pricey console.
According to Sucker Punch, this is the first game they’ve made “from the ground up” for PS5. And I expect that Spirit of Yōtei will take full advantage of the PS5 Pro. Here’s what Sucker Punch had to say about working on the PS5.
This is also the first Sucker Punch game built from the ground up for PlayStation 5, and we’re excited to build on the visual foundation we laid in Ghost of Tsushima, making the world feel even more realistic. We’ve got massive sightlines that let you see far into the environment, a brand recent sky with twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable wind movement on grass and vegetation, and more improvements to share in the future. Our recent environment also gives us the opportunity to introduce recent mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even recent weapons.
Now let’s take a look at some nice screenshots from this gorgeous looking game, which is scheduled to release in 2025.
