Be careful

Adventure platformer Magical Delicacy will have you cooking and exploring a sprawling city of hungry people this week, as this adorable little pixel-art platformer releases July 16. Magical Delicacy stands out by combining metroidvania-style platforming exploration with cuddly characters and life-simulation cooking game design, and it has enough going for it to appeal to many.

As the newborn witch Flora arrives and sets up shop in a novel town, she meets novel people in the community, from the common folk to the local magicians. She also gets involved in the local economy by buying ingredients and crafting in her kitchen and garden. You can exploit all of these things to create novel recipes you’ve learned, or improvise on them for novel purposes—all to sell to locals who need a novel potion, cake, meal, or tea.

As Flora develops her magical powers, she also begins to gain novel ways of getting around town and navigating platforms, allowing you to explore more remote parts of the city, find shortcuts to deliveries, and generally keep on searching for secrets and meeting strange people both day and night.

We first took notice of Magical Delicacy back in 2023 when Chris said “why not!” to the unexpected premise. Our interest was pretty much confirmed in February of this year when Lauren liked the demo enough to just go ahead and play it again.

“I got so caught up in the exploration and experimentation that I didn’t realize I was getting into the rhythm of the story. One night, Flora stumbles upon two members of opposing witch clans who want to drag her into their schemes, and then I get a message saying I’ve finished the demo. I could have kept playing, and I totally did, but after a snack from a few cooking quests, I’m very hungry for more,” she said.

Magical Delicacy will be available on Steamand next Xbox Game Passstarting from July 16.
