What if, instead of going to heaven when you die, you are instead instructed to pristine the afterlife with a broom like a cat? It’s a Crypt Custodian setup that helps power one of this year’s best Metroidvanias. The action and platforming loop is incredibly enjoyable, and the lightweight Metroidvania elements of opening up up-to-date paths with fresh abilities make it engaging to go back and forth. The whole thing is just incredibly cute and a perfect example of how the indie scene continues to shine glowing.

Thank God you’re here! it’s the stupidest game we’ve played in a long time, and it achieved it with such aplomb that it deserves to be rewarded. In essence, it’s like a point-and-click adventure game; all you can do is jump and hit things, but these interactions lead to consistently comical dialogue and scenes. The cartoon town of Barnsworth in Yorkshire is very well observed, and with its sleazy inhabitants, it feels like a real place. The presentation is perfectly tuned, the voice acting is great and the crazy British humor hits throughout. It’s not the most convoluted game in the world, but it’s one of the most fun we’ve played this year.

Red Candle Games transformed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice into a 2D Metroidvania, creating one of the best independent games of the year. It may be complex, but stick with it and you will be rewarded with a highly engaging adventure full of fantastic combat, stunning graphics, and a surprisingly good story. With an excellent soundtrack, you don’t have to bother waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong anymore, because one of the best Metroidvanias is now available.

Platinum Trophy: Balatro

There’s a straightforward reason why Balatro is the most talked about indie game of 2024, and it’s because it’s fucking brilliant. This roguelike card game starts out straightforward as you play with a typical deck of 52 cards, but soon evolves into something much deeper and richer the further you go. It’s layered with a variety of synergistic systems and items, all of which come together in wonderfully satisfying ways to turn your deck into a powerful scoring machine. It’s incredibly satisfying to build an extremely powerful deck and watch all the multipliers and effects pop up, and you’ll be constantly looking for opportunities to get your dopamine fix. It’s endlessly replayable, hypnotically addictive, and packed with up-to-date unlockable cards and alternative ways to play. It’s our top indie game of the year, but it’s certainly among the best games of 2024.
