Fortnite has long been a powerhouse in the third-person battle royale genre, but Epic Games’ all-new competitive mode is FPS mode in Fortnite you always wanted. Ballistic Fortnite proves that perspective is everything and puts us right in the middle of the action in Team Mode, with both Ranked and Unranked versions available in Early Access from December 11.
Taking notes from competitive FPS games like Call of Duty: Mobile, this Search & Destroy-style Fortnite game focuses on tactical strategy, communication, and teamwork. Ballistic wants to improve this by creating a fully competitive game mode, with no building, no respawning, and no quartering. It works in a similar way to CoD Seek & Destroy, where two 5v5 teams fight round after round, trying to prevail over the other. In Fortnite Ballistic, teams are divided into attackers and defenders. One of them tries to plant a reality-destroying Rift Point device at a specific point on the map, while the defenders are tasked with thwarting their efforts before the device can be detonated.
The Ballistics round ends when the Rift Point Device explodes or either team is completely eliminated. So if you are confident in your team’s kill capabilities, you can completely ignore the device and go for the kills or employ other tactics and strategies to confuse your opponents. After the first six rounds, players switch sides, but as soon as a team wins seven rounds, it wins the game.
You’ll start with a Ranger pistol and 800 credits, and you can earn more by eliminating enemies and planting the device. At the start of each match, you’ll need to spend those hard-earned credits wisely on additional items and more powerful weapons. If you survive the round, you keep your supplies, but if you die, you’re back to square one and have to rebuild your credits again. Consumables include five adaptable gadgets, such as a bubble shield or a recon gadget that allows you to mark enemies through walls.
As with all free-to-play mobile games of this type, we know for sure that the meta will appear almost immediately after the release of Fortnite Ballistic. We’re intrigued to see how the game will play out and how the meta will change as we learn what strategies work and what don’t. However, you will be able to practice in the unranked version of this modern game mode to familiarize yourself with the gadgets and weapons on offer before trying your hand at the competitive ranking.
