Fortnite is defrosting the Infinity Blade, arguably the most controversial weapon in the game’s history, to appear in the next season of the OG Battle Royale mode.
Starting on Thursday, December 11, Fortnite OG will move into Chapter 1 of Season 7 and allow players to experience the beloved retro season where all the snow fell and we could fly planes.
It was a brilliant season, although it will go down in Fortnite history as one of the most divisive among players – as Epic Games also introduced the mythic-quality Infinity Blade, which was notoriously overpowered. Only one Infinity Blade appeared in each match, and the lobby was an absolute mess as to who would get the breakthrough item first.
I remember enjoying a brief disruption of the game’s meta that was turned upside down, and I’ve never seen anything like it since (perhaps for good reason). Because after much public outcry, Infinity Blade was rendered unplayable and literally frozen on a pedestal after just a few days, never to be used again – until now.
Epic Games has not revealed when it intends to unlock Infinity Blade or for how long. It’s possible that the weapon will be offered in its full version for a tiny time, or it could be rebalanced – for now, players are left to speculate.
At least for now, players can expect everything else from the original Chapter 1 Season 7 to arrive later this week, including items like balloons and the ability to redeploy the glider, fall damage cancellation, and fan-favorite X-4 Stormwing planes. Fresh areas on the map include Polar Peak – home of the Ice King, the cheerful Merry Hamlet and the Frosty Flights air base.
Remixed outfits include a cat-tailed lynx (later Meowscles’ beloved cat), a onesie-wearing character, and a battle-savvy version of Fortnite’s own Santa Claus himself: Sergeant Winter. Is the game really giving up on the ability to change the Ice King’s skin? That seems to be the case for now, although rumors suggest we may see more of him in the near future.
As always, it’s a busy time for Fortnite – which recently released a huge novel Chapter 7 update for the game’s core Battle Royale and Zero Build modes. The game also recently featured a major Kill Bill crossover, during which players were able to watch a novel animated sequence from Tarantino included in Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. And last night we found out that Percy Jackson would also be coming to the game.
