Flappy Bird makes its triumphant return after a decade of being grounded

Yes, you read that right. No, you didn’t go back in time. Flappy Bird is officially back on mobile devices now that the Flappy Bird Foundation, a group of die-hard fans of the original game, has confirmed its trademark acquisition and licensing. More than 100 million of you either went into an unbridled rage or took to the skies as the game became an almost overnight viral sensation, and the world was never the same after the little bird that could — or couldn’t, depending on your skill — disappear from app stores.

But a revival is on the horizon, as not only is Flappy Bird back, but it’s back with something much more than the original game. The Flappy Bird Foundation has also acquired the rights to Piou Piou vs. Cactus, the mobile title that inspired the beloved bird. Honestly, we expect this current version to immediately land on our list of best tough games, purely because of that sweet, sweet frustration every time you hit your head on an obstacle. Oh, how we’ve missed that.

Flappy Bird is set to fly out of the henhouse again, with a release date set for later this year or potentially in 2025, though we don’t have a guaranteed date yet. But we do know it’s coming. The Flappy Bird Foundation is set to release this bigger and better version of the beloved tapper with all-new game modes, characters, progression, and massive multiplayer challenges, with the developer looking to preserve everything you loved—and loved to hate—from the original game, while also completely revamping the game’s ecosystem for this era.

“We’re incredibly excited to be bringing Flappy Bird back and delivering a new experience that will keep players engaged for years to come,” said Michael Roberts, Lead Developer of the Flappy Bird Foundation. “We have big plans for our little bird!” Considering how popular the original game was, and how several phones still with the app installed were listed on eBay and other buying and selling sites when the game was originally discontinued, this remake is taking flight and getting ready to hit you with a delicious punch of nostalgia.

“Today is a milestone not only in gaming, but for me personally,” explained Kek, creator of Piou Piou and a member of the founding team. “It’s so cool to see how influential Piou Piou has been to creators and hundreds of millions of players over the years. It’s amazing to work with such a dedicated team of fans and creators who are truly passionate about changing the narrative in the industry and bringing the original Flappy Bird back to life together.”

So, get your fingers out and mentally prepare yourself for the gleeful fury that has been missing from your life since Flappy Bird left the game stores all those years ago. It’s time to dive in. It’s definitely worthy of a spot on our list of the best mobile games, but if you’re looking for something a little calmer before the storm, we’ve also got a list of the best cozy games to enjoy. Or, if you’re just looking for a few freebies, we’ve got all the latest Zenless Zone Zero codes and Honkai Star Rail codes for you to enjoy.
