Final Fantasy’s Hironobu Sakaguchi has revealed which game in the series he considers “the most complete,” and it’s not the fan-favorite Final Fantasy 7.
Instead, Sakaguchi said Reciprocal considers Final Fantasy 6 to be at the top. It was released as the last 2D Final Fantasy game in 1994, before Final Fantasy 7 came to the original PlayStation and redefined the franchise in 1997.
“In terms of the Final Fantasy that I consider the ‘most complete,’ I think Final Fantasy 6 comes close and stands out among other Final Fantasy games, especially because it is the last Final Fantasy game to use pixel art in all its visual expression,” Sakaguchi said.
Final Fantasy 6 is undoubtedly one of the most beloved games in the series and first introduced the steampunk elements that are now synonymous with the game, moving away from the strictly medieval fantasy world of previous games.
While the game has already been ported to countless consoles and devices, fans are clamoring for Square Enix to release a full remake in the vein of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth, and the upcoming third and final installment in the game.
Final Fantasy 6 director Yoshinori Kitase did not express much hope when asked about this, however, as he said that a remake similar to Final Fantasy 7 could take around 20 years to complete. Final Fantasy 6 has so much content that he estimated it would take twice as long as the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series.
Kitase has previously commented on the popularity of the idea, even saying that many developers at Square Enix would be elated to work on a Final Fantasy 6 remake. The project would be very arduous, however, and Kitase said he could not think about it until the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy was completed.
