Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC will require “serious hardware to accommodate Cloud and his stupidly large sword,” we said when it announced system requirements in December 2024, including a whopping 155GB of storage. But the good news is that the game isn’t so demanding that it won’t run on Steam – in fact, it’s already officially verified on Steam.
Steam Deck Verification, as explained on the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth store page, means that it is “fully functional on Steam Deck and works great with the built-in controls and display.” All features are available through the default controller configuration, Steam Deck controller icons are displayed in-game, interface text is fully readable, and “default graphics configuration works well.”
“This means that when it launches on January 23, you’ll be able to play the critically-acclaimed RPG on a train, on a plane, wrapped up in bed, in the bathroom… wherever you want” – Square Enix he wrote. “Okay, we won’t judge.”
Steam Deck won’t deliver the full glory of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on the monstrous desktop PC whose benefits Square Enix touted in its PC trailer last week: improved lighting, improved graphics, DLSS, 4K support at 120 fps, and of course Tactile perfection mouse and keyboard control. On the other hand, you probably don’t want to lug your entire gaming PC onto the bus, and even if you do, where will you plug it in?
To celebrate the Steam Deck’s validation, Square Enix also announced a “very special chocobo-themed Steam Deck,” and it’s definitely a marketing ploy, but maybe not just for show: “It’s probably not the best idea to cover an electronic device with heating chocobo feathers, so we made them removable naturalYou’ll enjoy some great features, including a special startup video! As for how you can get it… well, that’s just a glance for now. But keep an eye on social media and you may find out more soon!”
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will debut on PC on January 23.
