If you’ve played EA Sports FC 25 and Silent Hill 2 Remake in the last few months, it sounds like you might enjoy the indie game. It’s called FEAR FA 98 and it’s a “horror soccer simulator” that just launched on Kickstarter.
The work of Madrid-based indie developer Jacob Jazz, whose previous projects such as Celery Emblem include Terrifying Tamarind Dinner AND Baobab Mausoleumboth hinting at twin retro vibes with a quirky variety of influences, FEAR FA 98 largely continues this trend.

So what is it? Well, based on it Kickstarter page this is what came out, Jazz hopes to create a version of FIFA 98 in the style of FIFA Street, but with a cornucopia of scary and brutal elements as a unique factor, rather than the ability to play one… two for yourself off the wall or have fun into slightly more casual threads.
The matches will feature teams composed of “serial killers”, “sectarians” and “psychopathic nurses” and will be played in stadiums modeled on cemeteries, clinics and scary cities.

“During a match, the environment works against you, and monsters and traps seem to make the game more interesting,” writes Jazz. “You can also use weapons to drain the opposing team’s forces, using options such as axes, rusty scissors or syringes, and even assault rifles. Additionally, you can summon ancient demons to help you fight against enemy forces!” Assuming these demons are the skinny boys hanging around the field in the preview GIFs, they certainly look like it would be fun to try and nutmeg with a ball, which is, of course, a severed head.
At the time of writing, the game’s Kickstarter has raised £874 of the £4,174 it aims to raise by November 22. Jazz has unveiled some ambitious plans, including both single-player and online elements, a story mode and local co-op. -op. They’ve also offered a “commentator mode” if supporters want one, which would allow two players to tap into their inner John Motson and chat about an online match being played by several other players, which I think could be comedy gold.
“FEAR FA 98 plans to launch on all consoles and mobile devices, depending on the economic goals we achieve during the campaign,” writes Jazz, and the starting point for the platform is PC via Steam. The Thart version will be released if the project reaches its original goal again, with a range of other features and platforms if it manages to achieve larger goals, including a film if the project raises one million euros.
