What is the history of BotW Link?

Link is a revered Knight of Hyrule and the main protagonist in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, and Tears of the Kingdom. Yes, Link is in all of the Zelda games, but they are mostly different incarnations.

Link’s father was also a Hyrule Knight, but his family was not noble. His hometown is rumored to be Hateno Village – where he owns a house by the river – but this led to disrespect from the nobility after his promotion to champion and personal bodyguard of Princess Zelda.

While in a deep sleep in the Temple of Resurrection, as discussed below in his BotW story, Link suffers from post-Casualty amnesia, meaning he has no memory of anyone or anything that happened before him, even if not all that much has changed in his 100 years of sleep.

What does Link look like in Breath of the Wild?

Mipha describes Link as a curious boy who is full of energy but also a bit reckless. As he grew older, he became much quieter and outwardly colder, though we still see glimpses of his former self from time to time.

In Breath of the Wild, however, due to his amnesia, Link is similar to his childhood self, with more expression and a lighter mood, as he does not remember the burden of his role in Hyrule. We can see the “old Link” in the cutscenes of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, where he participates in eating contests with Goron, among other fun adventures.

Zelda and the diaries also tell us that Link loves food and is a bit of a glutton. Again, the Goron Rock Roast eating contest proves this.

What is BotW Link’s story in-game?

In Breath of the Wild, you begin the game by waking up from a deep sleep in the Shrine of Resurrection as Link, after spending 100 years there. From there, a mysterious voice guides him to claim the Sheikah Slate and begin his journey to the outside world.

His first encounter is with an elderly man who later tells him that Calamity Ganon, an evil force that has appeared throughout Hyrule’s history, is currently sealed within Hyrule Castle, where it has resided for the past century. However, the elderly man informs Link that Calamity Ganon is about to break free, so it is up to Link to save Hyrule.

What are Link’s abilities in Breath of the Wild?

Link, despite being a Hylian and not a member of a mystical race, has a lot of power up his sleeve—even without the Shiekah Slate runes. He can sneak like Yiga, is a master of many weapons—especially bows and swords—and can bring out incredible skills in combat.

He’s also incredibly mighty. He can even push huge boulders, which is perfect for completing Korok puzzles.
