Activation Epic Games Store on mobile devices is a huge win for iOS and Android gamers, but not least because it makes Fortnite even easier to play wherever you are. As the company focuses on small-screen apps, CEO Steve Allison discusses how the Epic Games Store will meet the needs of mobile gamers with a suite of free games, social enhancements, and more.
Allison recently presented at a roundtable at Unreal Fest 2024 in Seattle Mobile playerprovides up-to-date information about the status of the Epic Games Store on mobile devices. Allison explains that after releasing three titles on mobile devices, including Fortnite, “we wanted as many players as possible to install the Epic Games Store on mobile devices before we release the first wave of games from third-party developers this holiday season.”
This includes games like Studio Wildcard’s Ark: Ultimate Mobile Edition, but iOS and Android users will also get the chance to join the free games, similar to how PC gamers currently enjoy them. “The free games program will launch in the fourth quarter with the arrival of third-party apps, and we will have some amazing things for players,” adds Allison.
The list of free mobile games hasn’t been revealed yet, but we expect it to be as extensive as the PC game. Previous releases have included games like Death Stranding, so it’s possible that a mobile port will be made available to players for free in the future.
Features such as group chat and cross-platform functionality are currently unavailable on the EGS mobile version, but this is not completely ruled out. According to the company, players can expect these features to arrive “a little later this year.” Allison notes that this will be an critical moment for the app because, he says, “once all these things come together, we’ll be off to the races.”
We can’t wait for the Epic Games Store to evolve into something special, but for now you’ll need to be patient.
