Epic Games Brings Fortnite to AltStore, Removes Battle Royale Mode from Samsung Galaxy Store, and More Changes

Published:

  • Epic Games has revealed fresh details about its mobile store coming to the EU on iOS
  • They also announced the removal of their games from the Samsung Galaxy Store.
  • Recent changes that allow third-party app stores in the EU can be expected to impact this issue

It seems like it was just a miniature while ago that we last wrote about the Epic Games Store coming to mobile devices and the commotion surrounding the Fortnite creator. But now things have taken a turn once again; first of all, Epic Games is moving its mobile catalog to AltStore on iOS in the EU, while also removing it from the Samsung Galaxy Store!

This the reason given for removing their games is a protest against Samsung’s policy against side-loading on their devices. Epic also revealed fresh terms for their store (set to launch in the EU on iOS “soon”), with a 12% fee for payments they process and no third-party payment fees, which, as you may remember, is why they got into trouble with Apple in the first place.

Epic also plans to announce support for at least two third-party app stores in the near future, most likely in the EU as well. The decision to end distribution partnerships with other app stores is significant, but is it a decision that will pay off?

One for all, all for one

While Epic’s news post on the subject is suitably evangelical, we’re always a little skeptical. After all, there’s a large difference between more modest developers and the multibillion-dollar creators of the Unreal Engine. Still, if it works as they intend, it could be a major breakthrough for mobile (pun intended).

Regardless, ending distribution partnerships with “official” stores like the Samsung Galaxy Store is a major step. Although considering they’ve already been removed from the iOS App Store and Google Play Store, which are much more widely used, it could be a drop in the ocean for Epic.
