Enshrouded has received what developers Keen Games call the “biggest” update to a survival game to date, with “large” being an appropriate word for mountains. Expect a recent playable area, the Alabaneve Peaks, with its own enemies, resources, non-threatening wildlife, and quests. The maximum character level has increased to 35! There are recent inhabitants to find and place in your poorly built houses! You can tame animals and make them live in poorly built houses! You could get hypothermia!
All this plus the first version of a recent vigorous weather system where sudden snowfalls draw heat away from your body in a recent biome. It’s a truly thorough overhaul for an Early Access game that Ollie described in January as having a “solid foundation,” praising its “best-in-class building” while complaining about “bland” combat, various quality of life issues, and an intentional abundance of fog. Find the trailer below.
And that’s it full changelog. Some highlights: There are recent Grappling Hook skills that allow you to operate it Bionic Commando style to pull aerial enemies into melee range or to lunge at larger enemies. Gliding is now more challenging and air turbulence affects the flight path, although this can be turned off. They also added a single-player pause feature and reworked the leveling curve to ensure you don’t hit the max level too early.
Perhaps most enticing from my early-game abandonment point of view is that the characters you can recruit to your farm now act more like people than glorified vending machines. They have a day and night cycle during which they will explore, check out intriguing places, take breaks, talk to you, and sleep (on the floor if necessary). The obvious downside to this is that you may start to feel bad about your living conditions.
Enshrouded will leave Early Access in 2025. If you want to know how it has evolved since January and what remains to be done, the creators have one of those things in the roadmap.
