Embarrassing AI graphics plague Call of Duty: Black Ops 7

If the completely ridiculous co-op campaign wasn’t bad enough, another downside dominating the discussions surrounding Call of Duty: Black Ops 7’s release is the game’s apparent utilize of AI graphics.

In the multiplayer customization menu, some of the calling cards you can attach to your profile look a lot like AI filters like the Studio Ghibli one that took Twitter by storm for a day. Other examples point to six fingers attached to one hand, and there are suggestions that the highly coveted Prestige emblems have been modified using artificial intelligence.

You can see some examples below:

This isn’t the first time the Call of Duty series has been accused – and proven – of using artificial intelligence in its graphics, such as a zombie Santa Claus from Black Ops 6 last year he showed off his six-fingered hand in a screenshot.

On Steam page for Black Ops 7, information was revealed confirming that “our team is using generative AI tools to help develop some of the game’s assets.” In response to the reaction to the launch, Activision released another statement, which reads:

Like many others around the world, we utilize a variety of digital tools, including artificial intelligence tools, to empower and support our teams in creating the best possible gaming experiences for our players. Our inventive process continues to be guided by the talented people in our studios.

This is a continuation of the discussion surrounding ARC Raiders, which has been criticized for using artificial intelligence instead of voice actors in some of the dialogue.
