- Eldrum: Black Dust is a choose-your-own-adventure text-based RPG, now available on iOS and Android
- Explore a murky fantasy world inspired by the Middle East
- Explore multiple D&D-inspired endings, classes, and turn-based combat
Some of you may remember the venerable Fighting Fantasy books, the choose-your-own-adventure adventure novels where you decided where the story would go. And now, if you want to relive those times but with all the convenience of current digital technology, you have a fresh option, Eldrum: Black Dust, the latest game in the Eldrum series.
Not only does Eldrum let you do exactly what CYOA does and determine your fate through a series of key choices, but it also features much more actual gameplay. Sure, you go from scene to scene, but you also have D&D-inspired combat, multiple classes, and a murky fantasy world to explore.
Available now on iOS and Android, Eldrum: Black Dust costs just $8.99 and features tons of original, distinctive graphics, immersive audio, and multiple endings for you to explore. Whether you’re trying fresh options or completely fresh classes, it seems to offer plenty of replayability.
Vacuum
I think one of the main barriers to entry in the CYOA market is that there is rarely much interactivity beyond making choices. However, even in the early days of Fighting Fantasy, some books chose to include real combat in the TTRPG version and other mechanics that are still used today to introduce players to the fresh system.
In my opinion, Eldrum: Black Dust seems to have a lot to offer, with original graphics and music, branching narrative and combat. This might not be the one that catches your eye if you’re a skeptic of the genre, but if you’re willing to try something fresh and love a good CYOA, maybe this could be your early Christmas gift.
