Koei Tecmo officially announced the release date Dynasty Warriors: Origins. The upcoming reboot, which will do away with the series’ conventional numbering, will take players back to age-old China next year on January 17, 2025.

The Japanese publisher also gave fans an in-depth look at Dynasty Warriors: Origins during TGS 2024, uploading a 23-minute gameplay preview with producer Tomohiko Sho, who shows off a host of exhilarating novel features. You can watch the whole thing here:

Take one look at Origins and you’ll realize that it’s not a huge departure from the well-established Musou game template. 1v1000 hack and slash combat is still in the spotlight, although developer Omega Force plans to refresh its aging combat system with some welcome tweaks and additions.

Battles have a more cinematic feel, giving players more defensive and strategic options between frantic button-mashing attacks. As the nameless hero of Origins, you’ll be able to capitalize on the grunts of your allies, activating tactical abilities that will give you the advantage.

Of course, you’ll still spend most of your time fighting your way through rows of enemy soldiers and watching their dead rag doll bodies get thrown at the screen. By doing this, you’ll gain Courage, which you can then spend to unleash Arts – special moves that change depending on the weapon you have.

One change we’re especially looking forward to is the increased threat from enemy officers. In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, they look more terrifying, covered in a powerful aura that must be weakened before they can be finished off. Some encounters will initiate duels in which all nearby troops will create an impromptu arena around the player and their opponent. The introduction of the parry move should also add a much-needed defensive layer to Musou combat.

The last main game in Koei’s flagship series did not fare well. Released in 2018, Dynasty Warriors 9 was intended to mark a radical change of direction, abandoning the conventional mission-based structure in favor of an wide-ranging open-world design. While it had some fascinating ideas, the overall execution was destitute and neglected a key part of Dynasty Warriors that needed improvement: combat.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.
