Double Dragon Revive is a recent, fully three-dimensional installment in the series

Published:

The Double Dragon series has been around since it first hit arcades in 1987, and has managed to maintain a surprisingly consistent release rate over the past 35-plus years. It wasn’t until last year that we got our hands on Double Dragon Gaiden, a pixelated take on the retrospective beat-em-up (or belt-scrolling action game, as the official YouTube description goes) based on the series.

This next installment is decidedly more state-of-the-art, with fully 3D graphics. This isn’t the first time the series has explored this dimension, but it’s occasional. The game is being developed by Yuke’s, a developer that worked on the WWE 2K series up until 2K19 and most recently developed AEW: Fight Forever. It’s being published, or showcased, as the trailer suggests, by Arc System Works, the developer behind Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Double Dragon Revive will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and One, and PC in 2025.

For a lot more on Double Dragon, but maybe not the version of Double Dragon you’re thinking of, head here to read all about the 1994 film. In 2019, I tracked down the film’s director, James Yukich, to talk about the film’s bizarre trajectory, what went wrong, and what he’d do differently if he had the chance to remake the film.
