Double Dragon was a fixture of arcade and console gaming in the overdue 80s and early 90s, appearing on multiple platforms and at one point teaming up with Battletoads (true). It’s revered as one of the most influential beat ’em ups of all time, with classics like Final Fight and Streets of Rage following in its footsteps.
Arc System Works has acquired the rights to the Double Dragon game and other classic beat ’em up series Kunio-Kun (River City) from Technos Japan Corp in 2015. Since then, it has released a slew of games in the aforementioned series, the most notable of which were Double Dragon 4 — created in collaboration with original series director Yoshihisa Kishimoto — and its anime-inspired spin-off, River City Girls.

In 2023, a roguelike spin-off titled Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons was released to average reviews.
Arc System Works’ sequel to Double Dragon is scheduled for release in 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC.
