DOOM and DOOM 2 get novel and improved versions with a brand novel episode and many more features

Published:

QuakeCon 2024 officially begins today, and ahead of the convention that typically sees major news and information from ZeniMax Media’s various IP owners, a novel list has surfaced confirming that remasters of the first two Doom games will be among the event’s announcements.

IN novel offer on Steam (noted by user X/Twitter @Wario64), DOOM + DOOM 2 is a novel compilation that will provide the definitive, newly enhanced versions of the first two DOOM games. This includes both games running on the KEX Engine, a proprietary game engine that has also been used in several re-releases of other classic shooters, including DOOM 64 (2020), Quake (2021), and Quake 2 (2023).

The official trailer can be seen below.

Some of the novel improvements in DOOM + DOOM 2 include online play, cross-platform deathmatch, and co-op support for up to 16 players. Additionally, the re-release will feature improved visuals, support for contemporary controllers, and a weapon carousel for faster weapon switching. A novel Deathmatch Map Pack consisting of 25 novel maps will also be included.

The announcement noted that those who purchase the compilation will not only receive both games, but also additional content. First and foremost, Legacy of Rust, an all-new episode of DOOM 2, was co-developed by id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames.

Other improvements include:

  • Online, cross-platform deathmatch for up to 16 players
  • Newly updated soundtrack
  • Multi-threaded rendering supporting up to 4K resolution

While it’s not confirmed, it appears that console owners who already own DOOM or DOOM 2 will receive the update for free. It’s currently available for purchase on Xbox Series X|S for $9.99, though it’s been pulled from the Steam store.

When it releases, DOOM + DOOM 2 will likely be the most comprehensive version of the revered shooter to date. The series has seen numerous reboots and updates over the years and maintains a devoted fan base to this day. A documentary and drama series about John Romero, one of the original designers of DOOM, is one of the projects currently in the works.

DOOM + DOOM 2 is out now. But this compilation is just one of a number of novel projects coming to the long-running first-person shooter. In June, id Software announced DOOM: The Dark Ages, a prequel to 2016’s Doom that’s set to release next year for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
