Today Twitch was unbanned Donald Trumpofficial channel. The Amazon-owned video game streaming site reversed the ban over Trump’s status as the official Republican presidential candidate in 2024, following the party’s convention earlier this week.
On June 29, 2020, the Twitch account of the then President of the United States was Temporarily banned for hateful behavior. However, on January 7, 2021, after a violent riot in DC, Twitch has imposed an indefinite banclaiming he did so to “prevent” Trump from using the streaming service to “incite further violence.” However, three years, five months and four weeks later, Trump’s official Twitter post The account has been unblocked.
July 19th as first reported by esports journalist Rod “Slasher” Breslau, Twitch has decided to reinstate Trump’s official account. Breslau shared this statement from Twitch on Twitter, explaining the reversal of the ban:
We’ve brought back former President Trump’s channel. We believe in listening to presidential candidates directly when possible. Trump is now the official Republican nominee for president of the United States.
When he was banned in June 2020, Twitch cited two instances of hateful rhetoric shared on his official streaming channel. One incident was an infamous moment during a 2016 rally that was re-aired on the channel, where Trump called Mexican immigrants “rapists.” Listening to Trump’s recent speeches, not much has changed, the former president continues to spew hateful comments, easily debunked lies, and other nonsense almost every time he speaks. But I think that’s no longer a factor for Twitch.
My city contacted Twitch about Trump’s return to the platform.
Twitch also told Breslau that Trump will have to follow the rules if he wants to avoid another suspension.
“Twitch does not have a ‘public figure policy,’ meaning that all channels are subject to our guidelines equally, regardless of whether the channel is owned by a public figure,” Twitch said in a statement.
Donald Trump, who recently survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvaniahe hasn’t updated his Twitch channel yet. He currently still shows his senior VP, Mike Pence on the home page.
