Roguelike! They’ve been all over the place lately, whether it’s a purely running game like Hades 2, a devilish connection to something like Cult of the Lamb’s settlement management, or the operate of the genre’s signature live-die-loop. “live-again” to add a little spice to a celebrated series such as The Rogue Prince of Persia. There’s a modern contender in the latter category: Diablo 4, which will soon introduce a modern wave-based roguelike mode next season.
Hell Hordes it’s a mix of roguelike-style progression – here you’ll collect Burning Aether resources, dubbed Diablo, to buy modern gear at the end of a run – and classic horde mode, with gangs of enemies arriving in 90-second waves. If you survive the wave and eliminate the last enemies, you’ll be able to choose one of three Hell Offers – fleeting upgrades for this run that offer potential bonuses for an extra challenge – before moving on to the next wave of baddies.
Collecting all waves in each of the mode’s eight difficulties will allow you to travel to the Well of Hatred and battle three random members of the Fallen Council (out of five possible bosses), which will reward even more Burning Aether. Ether is earned by each player, so you won’t have to argue with your friends about what to spend it on. At the end of the round, you’ll be able to cash in your collected Aether by purchasing Hell’s Spoils, offering gear, materials, gold, and “greater equipment” – an item with a guaranteed Greater Affix – for your efforts.
You can jump into Hell Hordes mode with the modern Hell Compass item, which will scale based on world level and difficulty. The compass itself can be upgraded by collecting Abyssal Scrolls, which grant access to higher levels of Infernal Hordes, which boost the chance of obtaining legendary and unique loot, as well as Greater Equipment Loot.
The Hellhordes mode will debut in Diablo 4 Season 5 and will be available to try starting tomorrow, June 25, for a week via the APRG Public Test Server. It will then appear in Season 5 proper, with any necessary adjustments made in response to test feedback.
In Season 5, there will be a modern post-campaign questline called Eyes of the Enemy, which you will need to complete to obtain the Infernal Compass needed to play in Horde Mode. Elsewhere in the update, there will be modern Legends, Uniques, and items that can be obtained anywhere, but will have a higher drop rate in Hell Hordes.
