When it comes to ecology, there are two ways to approach it. You can present a thoughtful, nuanced and realistic approach to the problem. Or you can go completely the opposite way and create something exaggerated and fantastical that will hopefully still get the point across! I’d say Dawnmaker falls into the latter camp.

Dawnmaker is basically a city building strategy in the same vein as something like Kingdomino or Dorfromantik. Or, as I would put it, reverse Frostpunk. Instead of stemming the tide of the inevitable, you work to expand the lithe, expanding its reach to free the Heksiga from the toxic smog that covers it.

It’s about optimizing spacing, and to do that you need to take advantage of the different cards dealt to you. Depending on where you place your buildings and how you upgrade them, it will be the difference between a sprawling metropolis and a humble village.

Bringing lithe

I can’t imagine why it took someone so long to twist the Frostpunk formula in a more positive direction. However, Dawnmaker differs radically from this niche in many respects, especially in its core mechanics and its focus on hex and deck building compared to the more conventional city building strategy.

Of course, there’s plenty of classic resource management as well, as you gather the necessary materials and food to sustain your growing city. You’ll also discover novel technologies that will hopefully make your attempt to restore the continent a reality.

Well, there’s certainly a lot to do in Dawnmaker. But if you’re like me, when it comes to strategy, you’re always hungry for a novel challenge. If that’s the case, it’s worth taking a look at our list of the best strategy games for iOS and finding some of our favorites!
