First trailer Creature Commandos is out now, and it looks like it’s going to be a pretty good first step towards a fresh DC Cinematic Universe.
Next year, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn will have a Superman movie coming out, which will of course be the first huge start to the fresh DCU. But it won’t really be the first project, as that title belongs to Creature Commandos, an animated series once again from Gunn, this time focusing on a fresh group of prisoners who Amanda Waller is subjecting to earnest human rights abuses. This fresh group, called Task Force M in contrast to Suicide Squad’s Task Force X, consists of Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, Alan Tudy as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, and Gunn’s brother Sean Gunn as GI Robot—presumably also behind the animal noises Weasel, who he also played in Suicide Squad.
Viola Davis also returns to play Amanda Waller from both Suicide Squad movies, as well as Peacemaker and Black Adam , and Steve Agee also returns as John Economos. The first trailer, revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, which you can watch above, looks really good! The character designs are solid and quite stylized. Previously, executive producer Dean Lorey described the series as the “first expression” of Gunn’s fresh DCU in terms of tone, so when it hits Max in December, you’ll have a general idea of what to expect.

As for what to expect from the series itself in terms of plot, there’s not much information to start with. The official description explains, “Creature Commandos follows a secret team of trapped monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.” So you’ll have to wait until the first full trailer drops to find out more.
