Crash Bandicoot 5 Is Supposedly in the Works, But One Former Toys For Bob Developer Says The Project Has Been Cancelled: ‘It’ll Break Hearts’

Sorry, Crash Bandicoot fans, but it looks like a fifth installment was in the works but was canceled at some point.

The last few years have been a bit of a strange one for everyone’s favourite bandicoot. It experienced something of a renaissance in 2017 when the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy brought the classic PS1 character back to the forefront, finding success with a novel, younger audience. This then led to a Crash Team Racing remake in 2019, and of course the Toys for Bob sequel to the original trilogy, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, came out a year later. Things have been a bit serene since then though. Last year saw the arrival of Crash Team Rumble, a live service game that ultimately didn’t do too well, with its last content update arriving in March of this year. But there was always the question of whether or not there would be a Crash 5. And the answer, as it turns out, is that it was in development – but not anymore.

That’s according to Nicholas Kole, a character artist who has worked on games like Spyro Reignited Trilogy and most notably Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time . Unfortunately, the game Kole was working on up until recently, codenamed Project Dragon, was canceled, which of course left some fans wondering if this had anything to do with Spyro’s purple dragon. Kole clarified that no, Project Dragon wasn’t the novel Spyro (he later shared a graphic that revealed it was a Minecraft-inspired fantasy game that honestly looks pretty adorable). However, Kole noted in a tweet debunking the myth that this is a Spyro game that “one day people will hear about the Crash 5 that never was, and it will break hearts.”

There was never an official announcement regarding Crash 5, and Kole is no longer with Toys for Bob, so take this with a grain of salt to be sheltered. The Crash 4 developer went solo earlier this year, now taking on the world of game development as an independent studio — though he has signed a deal with Microsoft for his next game (many fans are hoping it’ll be a novel Spyro title, which isn’t surprising). For now, we’ll just have to wait and see if anyone is able to share more about this Schrodinger’s Crash 5 in the future.
