Concord: The start and adventure ahead

Published:

WITH Agreement launching next week on August 23rd, we wanted to take a moment to talk about the adventure that lies ahead. We see the launch as just the beginning. The beginning of not only the vision we have for Concord, but also the beginning of how we support and evolve the game with our players.

The base game provides the foundation we can build on over time, with systems that expand the universe, introduce recent ways to play and improve each character, provide hundreds of unique rewards to earn and unlock, and evolve the story each week, as well as seasonal updates that introduce recent characters, recent maps and worlds, recent modes, recent stories, recent features, and more.*

With the launch approaching, let’s take a look at what the future holds for Concord:

Concord Season 1 starts in October

From the very beginning, we wanted Concord to be a complete experience, where all the core content is available to you from day one and into the future—without the constraints of paid expansions or Battle Pass. We take your investment in the game seriously and want to make sure we bring all players along on this journey.

Our first major content haul will arrive in October with the launch of Concord Season 1: The Tempest. Season 1 will see the introduction of an all-new playable Freegunner, as well as an all-new map, recent Freegunner variants, more cosmetics and rewards to earn, and a recent season of weekly Cinematic Vignettes that continue the story of the Northstar crew.

In Season 1, we will also be introducing an in-game store for those who wish to further customize their Freegunners with additional customization items and continue to support the game. These will be in addition to the hundreds of rewards that can be earned through progression and will be purely cosmetic, optional, and will have no impact on gameplay.

We’re also strenuous at work on future seasons, starting with Season 2, which is set to launch in January 2025, and additional seasonal drops throughout Concord’s first year. We can’t wait to fully unpack what we have in store for Season 1 before its October premiere.

The constant evolution of your crew

When we first started Firewalk, we thought a lot about the type of game we wanted to make and what we could add to the multiplayer FPS genre. We knew we had to focus on the fundamentals that make an FPS great: precise, responsive gameplay and brisk, fluid mobility. These had to be the foundation of everything.

But we also wanted special spices to provide skills to characters. Beyond the impact their skills, roles, and skill sets could have on a moment-to-moment basis in combat, we saw thrilling opportunities to add strategic layers to how and when you chose to employ them in a match. In effect, we wanted to combine the theoretical construct of a deck builder with a first-person PVP shooter. This became the foundation of our Crew Builder system.

Crew Builder lets you create custom crews of Freegunners to take into the game. Each custom crew offers 12 customizable slots that you can fill with characters from a growing list of Freegunners and their variants. Each Freegunner will have multiple variants, which are unique versions of each character that have special modifiers to their base abilities and can be unlocked by completing various challenges in the game.

In this image you can see the Freegunner selection screen and on the left side of the screen is a list of crew bonuses that will now be applied to your Freegunner.

Each custom crew must have five unique Freegunners, but you can collect up to three copies of any Freegunner variant. This allows you to focus on specific characters that you enjoy playing and that best fit your overall team composition, game modes, or your overall playstyle.

However, while the Crew Builder lets you hone your own unique approach to combat strategy, it’s also meant to inspire experimentation with different characters. Each Custom Crew has four Back Up slots, which are randomly filled by Freegunners not in your Custom Crew.

The Crew Builder also encourages you to fill out Custom Crews with characters with different roles. Unlike established archetypes like Tank or Support, each Freegunner in Concord is designed to deal high DPS and be effective in combat. Instead, our characters are defined by one of six distinct roles and the impact they can have on combat—whether that’s by blocking an area, dominating long lines of sight, or flanking enemies.

This image shows the symbols and descriptions of the six distinct Freegunner roles: Anchor, Breacher, Haunt, Ranger, Tactician, and Warden. Each of these offers a unique bonus that stacks when you play different Freegunners in matches.

Balancing your crew with Freegunners of different roles can give you an advantage with special benefits in a match called Crew Bonuses. When you first deploy Freegunners of different roles in a match, you gain special bonuses that can escalate mobility, improve weapon recoil, reduce cooldowns, and more that apply to every character you deploy from that point on.

When you combine all of these systems—the Crew Builder, Back-Up Slots, Freegunner Variants, and Crew Bonuses—you can create, refine, and perfect your Concord builds as your experience grows. This also allows the meta to continually evolve in thrilling recent directions as you unlock recent Freegunner Variants, and recent Freegunners and Variants are introduced over time each Season.

Ultimately, when we step back and think about what made us create Concord and what we love most about multiplayer games, it’s this: the potential for constant evolution. The thrill of the potential, of where we can take the experience. And the sense of adventure of discovery, together.
