Cat Quest 3 is a pun-filled action RPG about animal pirates, available now on Steam

Published:

Did The Gentlebros come up with the “Pi-Rats” pun and then backtracked on it, deciding that Cat Quest 3 should have a pirate theme? Or was “Purr-ibean” the initiating pun? I figure the action-RPG sequel must have started with a pun, considering its Steam page boasts that it also has “furr-ocious spells” and “gla-meow-rous costumes.”

Now it’s also available on Steam, which makes me very cheerful.

I’ll be forthright, I’m not a huge fan of puns or pun worlds, but I am a fan of Cat Quest. The first two games are good, accessible hack-and-slashers with a colorful world to explore, and Cat Quest 2 introduced co-op. They’re great games to play with kids, as a sort of My First Action-RPG.

Cat Quest 3 continues the solo and local co-op modes in nature. Its substantial up-to-date features are naval combat (previous games eventually let your character just walk on water), a 2.5D world (instead of just 2D), and an “improved” combat system that allows for combo attacks and quick weapon swaps. The latter sounds great to me, but I hope it doesn’t push it beyond the childish limits.

Gentlebros should have some time to enjoy the release of one game, but the introduction of Pi-Rats to the animal ecosystem in Cat Quest raises the question of what kind of animal-related pun theme could appear in Cat Quest 4. I suggest Vi-King Crabs.

Cat Quest 3 is on Steam for £15.29/€18/$18.
