Microsoft announced earlier this year that a 2024 Call of Duty game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6will be a day one release for Game Pass subscribers. But between that announcement and the October release Black Ops 6Microsoft has updated its Game Pass subscription offering; the company has raised the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and retired the entry-level Game Pass tier, replacing it with Xbox Game Pass Standard. The novel Game Pass Standard will not include day-one releases — a major shift in Microsoft’s strategy.

Microsoft closed its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023, 21 months after announcing plans to buy the publisher of Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Candy Crush. Since the deal closed, Microsoft has made little progress in transitioning Activision Blizzard’s catalog to Game Pass. However, Microsoft has released Blizzard Entertainment Diablo 4 to Game Pass subscribers on consoles and PC in March.
