Bungie is releasing a lengthy development update for Extraction Shooter, Marathon on PS5

Published:

Bungie’s Marathon game director Joe Ziegler got on camera and gave a nearly 10-minute development update on the highly anticipated PS5 extraction shooter. Additionally, some up-to-date images have been shown but no gameplay, with the promise of “lots more” to come in 2025, including gameplay testing.

Gematsu includes the full transcript if you’re reading at an advanced level, but if you prefer just the highlights, Zeigler reveals the following facts. Marathon is a subgenre of extraction shooters by Bungie, and “the goal of each session is to get out alive, and you’ll complete tasks and find loot along the way” – described as an “intense survival experience.” Equipable gear will change your character’s stats, making us think of Destiny, and there will be plenty of loot and weapons to track down. As “runners”, players can operate a tiny subset of abilities beyond those provided by equipped equipment.

Bungie has been making “a lot of aggressive changes” over the last few years, aggressively rolling out changes and working with players and content creators. Ziegler says the game runs well in some ways and takes a little longer in others. For example, the game’s environments are “starting to come together in a really, really beautiful way,” but some character models “are not quite ready yet.”
