Bungie has finally admitted that it failed Destiny 2 and is going to make changes

After much negative feedback and dwindling player numbers, Bungie has admitted that they made some bad decisions with Destiny 2. Here’s their statement from this week’s TWAB.

“With Edge of Fate, we presented a different vision for the future of the Destiny 2 base game. The goal was to refocus our releases and player calls to action on the familiar but deeper pursuit of the Force and climbing higher gear levels across a broader range of activities that support customizable challenges and commensurate rewards.

Very quickly, feedback made it clear that this was the wrong path for Destiny.

Even if our execution was perfect, and we can clearly see that it wasn’t, it’s clear that grinding power will never replace winning a trophy. Climbing through one-off levels on your way to the hardware you want to build around is not aspirational. And Portal itself loses too much of Destiny’s sense of place and exploration. These lessons, and many others, have been taken to heart by our team over the past three months.

From 9.0.0 to 9.1.5, the entire team focused on responding to player feedback, starting with the quickest changes and working on the more challenging ones. We focused on faster, better rewards, greater player freedom in choosing activities and removing barriers to playing with friends.

Since Destiny’s launch over a decade ago, it has always been a living, reactive world. Through our successes and failures, we are grateful for the opportunity to explore different paths, learn from them, and with this clarity build a modern, inspiring vision with and for our players. As we work on our plans and communications to respond to your feedback, thank you for joining us on this journey as we evolve our strategy for the long-term future of the Destiny franchise. “

The portal and its power grind were met with weighty criticism because it required players to repeat the same few actions to raise their power level before they started receiving decent weapon drops. This meant that playing other activities like Dares of Eternity was completely pointless, and if so, matchmaking was unlikely to find other players.

Updates 9.5.0 (December 2) and 9.5.0.1 (December 9) will begin to introduce changes to the game.

  • Greater access to power progression, especially in expansion content.
    • Players, if they wish, will be able to reach the power cap directly through the actions of the Renegades.
  • Seasonal power and featured gear carried through the seasons.
    • All exotic weapons and armor are now available.
    • Additionally, we’re moving Power acquisition from manual lifting to organic drops: log in, play Renegades, catapult to 300 Power, and play with friends.
  • Vault capacity and improvements to reduce hoarding pressure.
    • We have increased the capacity of the Vault by an additional 300 places to 1,000 and are working on more.
    • Additionally, Vault now has an improved filtering system to assist you find what you’re looking for faster.

Renegades looks nippy, so I’ll join the Guardians again when it comes out, how about you?
