Both Twitch and TwitchCon are everything that inclusive spaces should be

I’m at the Glitch Theater at the San Diego Convention Center during TwitchCon 2024, watching a drag queen artist dressed as Silent HillPyramid Head lip syncs to a nu-metal song on stage. The crowd is a mix of well-known streamers like Central Committee and KaceyTron, smaller Twitch affiliates, and fans – and all of them are living for the third annual drag showcase at TwitchCon. JuiceBoxx, a streamer and one of this year’s hosts, has her face plastered all over the convention center. Ru Paul’s drag race superstar Trixie Mattel has a makeup salon on the dance floor where employees offer beauty tips and touch-ups, and at an off-site Capcom event, several drag queens hang around, their hair almost brushing the bar’s ceiling. Attendees can put pronoun pins on their badges, and nonprofits like TransLifeline have booths on the floor. —Alyssa Mercante
