We’re excited to announce that Bootstrap Island will officially arrive on PlayStation VR2 in 2026. This will be the most immersive version of Bootstrap Island ever, powered by the advanced features of PS VR2. Built exclusively for high-quality hardware, it is designed to provide realism, touch interactions and a powerful sense of presence. And now we’re bringing that vision to PS VR2.
Bootstrap Island makes the most of your survival instinct
Bootstrap Island is a realistic yet intense survival adventure inspired by Robinson Crusoe and other classic stories. After a brutal shipwreck, you wake up as Daniel, a 17th century survivor stranded on a deadly tropical island. To survive, you must learn quickly and face wild beasts, powerful forces of nature and secrets hidden deep in the jungle.
An unforgiving experience
There is no hand holding, no guidelines and no second chances. Only your instinct, skills and determination count. Bootstrap Island is a ruthless roguelike where every decision has consequences.
You’ll gather food and fresh water, hunt fish and wildlife, and prepare for the dangers of nightfall. When darkness comes, the beasts attack. You will need to learn how to airy fires and load and fire a flintlock gun because you will be relying on it.
Animals are not the only threat. Rain, storms, disease, quicksand, territorial animals and poisonous fruit are constant threats.
Dynamic open world
Bootstrap Island offers a very realistic, systems-driven world where everything is responsive. Day and night cycles, weather, fire and fluids interact in complicated and often unpredictable ways.
You can explore the island freely. Beaches, riverside areas, jungles, and other biomes offer various resources. Every interaction encourages experimentation and instinctive problem solving. You just have to be inventive.
Progress to survive longer
Every death teaches something valuable. You learn by doing, adapt your strategy, and unlock modern items that will facilitate you survive longer in future series. As you stay alive longer, you’ll gain access to equipment bags, a construction book to build shelters and fortifications, and equipment such as a musket for more firepower. The medicine in the bottles helps fight diseases. You will start to notice subtle changes in your surroundings. Survival depends on knowledge, preparation and experience.
Engaging narrative
Discover the story of the survivor, their life before the disaster and the uncertain future that awaits them.
As you explore, you will discover who you are, why you were on the ship, and whether your presence on the island is a coincidence or something more significant. There are traces of other people. Whether they are hostile or genial, you will discover during your journey.
Randomized sessions
No two runs are the same. Each session shuffles resources, events, weather patterns, and types of creatures that hunt at night. The island is constantly changing. Items found in chests, territorial threats, and weather conditions change from run to run. Adaptation is crucial.
PS VR2 takes full advantage of our vision of survival
From the very beginning, our goal with Bootstrap Island was to create a VR experience so believable that players would forget about the real world, and that every interaction, from lighting a fire to gathering resources, felt natural, grounded, and physically intuitive. To achieve this, the game relies on interconnected systems where fire, water, weather, physics and animal behavior constantly influence each other, creating moments that feel alive and unplanned. For us, VR has always been more than just a technology; it is a medium capable of evoking presence, emotion and delight.
PS VR2 allows us to fully express this vision of the most realistic survival experiences in VR with features such as backlit rendering for exceptional clarity and performance, headset vibrations that intensify dramatic moments such as storms and near-death encounters, and adaptive triggers with advanced touch technology that create realistic sensations including lightning strikes, arc tension and gun recoil. Together, these capabilities make the PS VR2 version of Bootstrap Island the most immersive version of the game yet.
Bootstrap Island was developed by a petite independent team at Maru VR, and although this is our first premium game, over the last eight years we have created over 40 VR games to understand the medium and learn how to harness its potential.
