Black Myth: Wukong’s Xbox release delay is due to exclusivity agreement with Sony, a source told IGN, confirming reports on the subject Forbes and what IGN heard elsewhere.
Source denies Black Myth: Wukong delay is due to memory leak reported by Spanish tipster eXtas1s after what they said was a conversation with Xbox developers at Gamescom. Because of this, they claimed, Black Myth: Wukong was unable to pass bug checks and was therefore postponed indefinitely.
However, IGN understands that no technical issues have been reported that could delay Black Myth: Wukong to Xbox. Instead, the Xbox delay is the result of an exclusivity agreement that neither Game Science nor Sony have publicized, the source said. The source called the rumors of technical issues on Xbox “inaccurate.”
IGN has reached out to both Game Science and Sony for comment on the reports.
The recent information follows a series of confusing rumors and contradictory statements dating back to June. Observers first noticed the delay when the Xbox Series X|S disappeared from the Black Myth: Wukong trailer shown during Summer Game Fest. In its Frequently asked questionsGame Science said it is still working on optimizing the Xbox version.
“We’re currently optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards, so it won’t be released simultaneously with other platforms. We apologize for the delay and are working to minimize the wait for Xbox users. We’ll provide a release date as soon as it meets our quality standards,” Game Science’s FAQ reads.
Microsoft released its own statement on June 21, saying, “We’re excited to launch Black Myth Wukong on Xbox Series X|S and are working with Game Science to bring the game to our platforms. We can’t comment on agreements our partners have with other platform holders, but we remain focused on making Xbox the best platform for gamers, and great games are at the heart of that.”
Black myth: Wukong is a technical monster
Rumors of a technical issue were partially fueled by the 2023 Baldur’s Gate 3 Xbox saga, which saw the release of the Xbox version delayed until December due to difficulties optimizing it for the Xbox Series S. Studio Larian was ultimately forced to remove the split-screen co-op mode from the Xbox Series S version in order to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Microsoft’s platform.
The rumors are given further credence by the fact that Black Myth: Wukong is a technical monster, with our review noting that its fidelity is enough to make even a top-of-the-line RTX 4090 rig sweat. Game Science has apologized for any technical issues players have run into, and today released a 1.6GB patch with various fixes and adjustments.
Either way, Black Myth: Wukong is doing great, surpassing its Steam player count for the first time this week to a whopping 37 million. It also managed to sell over 10 million copies in the three days since its launch.
