GWENT: The Witcher Card Game

It’s taken a while, but the official spin-off of Gwent, the Witcher 3 card game, is now available on both Android and iOS. It’s completely different from what it was at launch, and has undergone several updates and fixes, meaning that us mobile jockeys get a game that’s addictive and quite unique compared to some of its peers. It’s a power struggle between two people, but it’s not about smashing each other’s cards into dust or attacking life points – it’s simply a best-of-three fight in which at the end of the round you will have more cards than your opponent.

This elementary concept can inspire a surprising number of cunning card combinations, with card advantage being a very critical concept. As a free-to-play game, it does feature IAPS and microtransactions, but is very subdued and you can still access cards through gameplay. Legends of Runeterra

Considered by many to be Riot Game’s challenge to Hearthstone’s dominance over the mobile gaming genre, Legends of Runeterra changes that formula enough. With a fresh mana reduction spell system and attack and block phases, the game’s tactical depth surpasses many rivals in the genre and definitely makes it one of the best card games on Android.

Legends of Runeterra takes place in the same world as League of Legends, and the quality and quantity of the game’s graphics are quite astonishing, not only enhancing the world but also using its many characters as heroes in the game. A tired group of adventurers stumbles into a strange tavern in the forest. The Paladin approaches the bar where the innkeeper is polishing a mug and says, “My good lord, please give me one of your best mugs of beer, for our journey has been long and tiring!” The innkeeper looks up in surprise: “We only serve cards here, boy.” The paladin is surprised. “Then we’ll find another place!” However, when he tries to leave, it turns out that the door is locked. “Oh, you can’t leave now. Come and warm yourself by the fire. I have a little game to show you.”

This is the story of how Hearthstone came to be and how it essentially defined an entire generation of mobile deck builders. Based on the Warcraft universe, players fight against selected heroes and minions, using gradually increasing mana resources to play cards and escalate the battle. The game also introduced the Battlegrounds auto-chess mode, which was met with great acclaim. The game of heated potato with the nitroglycerin-soaked cat escalates until every player but one has met their creator. Exploding Kittens combines fiery feline death and elementary humor to create a game with hostility and sabotage at its core. Each player only has one life to live and one disarm card to keep that fur from turning into a ball of fire that will quickly find players at each other’s throats. The game is a childish, cartoonish pastiche of obvious jokes repeated too often, but it remains one of the best sinful games on the market.
