Let’s dive into the lofty grass and discover some of the best grass-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

Torterra

Quick move – Razor Leaf
Charged movement – Frenzy Plant (Elite TM or Community Day)

Watch out, the substantial boy is on board. We love Torterra, the tree-carrying turtle, who draws inspiration from the senior idea that the planet existed on the back of a giant turtle. Trees grow out of his back, which would personally give me a lot of back problems. For his size, Torterra is a muscular beast that can take a lot of beating, especially thanks to his Grass and Ground-type joints, which give him resistance to Ground, Rock, and Electric-types.

This guy is basically built to take down Tyranitar, and if you have access to Frenzy Plant, this is definitely the way to go. Frenzy Plant was the Community Move of the Day, so if you evolved the senior Torterra back then, you might be in luck – or you could employ an elite TM instead. If you’re having trouble taking down this muscle-bound guy, check out our Ground-type Pokémon weaknesses guide.

Shaymin – Sky Form

Quick move -Magic Leaf
Charged movement -Grass knot

This adorable little hedgehog Pokémon also has a second form, a “sky form,” that mixes up its stats and makes it look like… a little grass dog Pokémon? Either way, Shaymin’s sky form gains the Flying type on top of its Grass type, giving it a mix of Fighting, Water, Grass, and Ground resistances.

Shaymin has a high 261 Attack stat, which when used with Solar Beam makes Shaymin a bit of a glass cannon, as its other stats aren’t all that impressive. Still, the common Grass and Flying types make it an ideal way to counter Pokémon like Swampert, but you should avoid Ice-type Pokémon, as they can easily overpower Shaymin.

Grass Pokemon Roserade outlined in white and pasted on a blurred background

Rose

Quick move -Magic Leaf
Charged movement -Grass knot

A fantastic mix of Grass and Poison means Roserade has five resistances, spanning Fighting, Water, Electric, Fairy, and Grass. This makes the Budew evolution a great choice against Fish Pokémon like Lanturn and substantial threats like Mega Blastoise.

Mixing Grass and Poison moves also helps make the most of the push bonus, but you still have to watch out for common Psychic threats like Mewtwo. Roserade also has some chilly shiny, color-changing flowers it holds, which are black and purple instead of red and blue.

Grass Pokemon Sceptile outlined in white and pasted on a blurred background

Susceptible

Quick move – Projectile Seeds
Charged movement – Plant of Madness (Elite TM)

Good senior Sceptile takes us back to the days when starters evolved into single-type monsters (i.e., Gen 3 Pokémon). Pure Grass is great against Ground, Water, and Electric-types, but still leaves you vulnerable to very common threats like Fire and Ice.

Still, its great attack stats and Frenzy Plant make it well suited to fight Rotom (wash), Quagsire, Swampert, and massive threats like Mega Gyrados. That punch on Frenzy Plant in particular makes it a move that opponents really want to avoid. I’ve always liked Sceptile’s lizard design, and while it’s usually green, its shiny form has a really nice shade of blue-green that I love.

Venusaur

Quick move – Vine Whip
Charged movement – Plant of Madness (Elite TM)

Yep, another entry that uses Frenzy Plant with a well-placed punch – and combining that with its versatile stats makes Venusaur a threat to Water Pokémon everywhere. That grass poison type is great for resistances, and Mega Venusaur packs a real punch if you know how to employ them. Sneaky ‘mon like Swampert and Quagsire don’t last long if you have the right stats, and even the mighty Ryhperior doesn’t have much to counter you.

Venusaur is one of the original Gen 1 Pokémon, number 003 in the Pokédex, and holds a place in the hearts of many Trainers who grew up with Bulbasaur and his crew. We do wish its shine was a bit cooler, though, as it appears to be just a slightly lighter shade of green.

Alolan Exeggutor grass Pokemon outlined in white and pasted on a blurred background

Alolan Exeggutor

Quick move -Dragon Tail (against dragons) or Bullet Seed
Charged movement -Draco Meteor (against dragons) or Solar Beam

Arguably the tallest Pokémon ever to exist, Alolan Exeggutor shows what happens when a Pokémon moves to warmer temperatures and gets all the food it needs – it gets pretty damn massive. Its captivating mix of Grass and Dragon types unfortunately gives Exeggutor more weaknesses than resistances, especially to common threats like Ice, Dragon, and Fairy. Despite this, it does have a base attack stat of 230, so with the right training, those charged moves can pack a punch.

The best way to employ Alolan Exeggutor is to battle other Dragon Pokémon, and if that’s your plan, you should go for Draco Meteor. Even bigger threats like Mega Amphoros, Haxorus, and Mega Latios have to watch out for this giant egg-shaped creature. We also really love its design, and it has a fantastic shine to it, with pretty autumnal red leaves instead of the usual green.

Grass Pokemon: Kartana on a grass background

Power

Quick move – Razor Leaf
Charged movement – Leaf blade

We’re not entirely sure how this Pokémon Go Ultra Beast is a Grass-type, considering it’s literally a piece of origami paper, but it’s incredibly mighty. Unfortunately, Kartana’s combination of Grass and Steel types makes it doubly delicate to Fire-type Pokémon, so keep that in mind.

Despite this, it is mighty against almost everything else and can learn a wide range of moves such as Grass, Flying, Dark, and Bug, allowing you to diversify your strategy.

Grass Pokemon: Zarude on a grass background

Zaruda

Quick move – Vine Whip
Charged movement -Whip of Power

Another mighty gen 8 Pokémon is Zarude, a mythical monkey. Perhaps because of its tree-dwelling, both of its strongest grass-type moves are whip-based, as are the vines it swings from.

This shadowy ape is vulnerable to a variety of attack types, but its proficiency with grass and shadowy moves still earns it a spot in the top ten grass-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go.
