Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios, revealed that Baldur’s Gate 3 players download over 1 million mods in 24 hours. This comes after the game’s latest update, which added mod support and a full mod manager.
Players are modifying Baldur’s Gate 3 since it was originally released on PC. However, since its release Baldur’s Gate 3 With Patch 7, fans have a dedicated native mod manager and suite of tools built into the game. This makes modding the game easier than ever before, which is almost certainly why so many players downloaded so many mods as soon as the update became available and installed on their computers.
Ready, set, mod
It is arduous to determine exactly how much Baldur’s Gate 3 players were required to download mods as soon as Patch 7 was announced. The game sold at least 2.5 million copies during Early Access, and is reported to have sold 10 million copies by February 2024. If we exploit this data, we can conclude that around 10% of players downloaded mods for the game within 24 hours, but more may have downloaded mods since then.
Fans have their own thoughts on Vincke’s revelation. User J0lly-Rancher said, “Are they all mommy and daddy mods? Because I was trying to find something that was cool or useful and I couldn’t find anything among all of them so I gave up lol.”
But I think Chefpk hits exactly on what this patch does for the game. “Well, you and your team just gave us a way to play BG3 for the next 5-10 years, just like we did with Skyrim. The possibilities are now basically endless.”
It’s true that modders can create all sorts of things for games, including entirely recent plots, items, and even continents if they have enough time. I would expect a recent Essential Mod Pack to appear in the next few weeks, consisting of mods that all PC gamers agree improve the game and provide the best experience.
Over time, given that Larian Studios is no longer creating DLC for Baldur’s Gate 3we may end up with some fan extensions for this title. After fixing Skyrim Mods allowed game developers to create all sorts of recent quests and content for the game. Fall modders have even created a recent entry in a place the main series has never been. Assuming there is a powerful community that wants to play, I don’t see why modders would ever stop coming.
