It looks like Avowed will handle quests a little differently than other RPGs, as it turns out you’ll be able to start almost all of them in more than one way.
Obsidian’s upcoming RPG Avowed really looks like it could be something special if it turns out to be as compelling as the developer describes it to be. The latest tidbit about a game that paints a unique picture comes from a recent interview GamesRadar with the game’s environmental region designer Berto Ritger, specifically on how the initial quests will work. “I think almost every, if not every, mission in the game can be started in more than one way,” Ritger explained. “You can do things out of order, you can pick up items and give them to people who want them, or you can kill a character or whatever, you can play things incorrectly, for example.

“You can come to the dungeon or vice versa, from a different direction than usual. We want you to be able to do this based on the natural progression of the world.” Personally, I really like this sound. Obvious games generally have their limits, and not every game can do everything, but the attractive thing about RPGs is their flexibility, and I like the idea of different players having different experiences in all the tasks available in the game. “We just want to continually develop a sense of exploration, wanderlust, and just pleasantly getting lost,” Ritger also noted.
Ritger previously shared in another interview that he believes “skippable content” is the “core” of RPGs, and the fact that quests can start in more than one way seems to fit that ethos quite well.
You don’t have to wait long for Avowed either, because the game will be released in just a few months, and will premiere on February 18 on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
