With Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ release delayed to 2025, the game now becomes a direct competitor to Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, announced yesterday during Sony’s State of Play.
The move is drawing comparisons between the two games, as both are games set in feudal Japan and feature classic images of ninjas, samurai, and ronin. Despite the similarities, however, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot argues that there is enough room for two large-scale open-world action-adventure games set in Japan.
“There is a lot of room for very high-quality games, and these two games have the potential to sell very well,” Guillemot said.
As for the differences between the two games, Guillemot focused on the two protagonists of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, allowing the player to play as either a ninja or a samurai.
“The most important thing is to deliver a fantastic experience to players with a dual-hero approach and two different and complementary game modes… The action is set in feudal Japan and should be really enticing,” he said.
Either way, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will face a lot of competition, as its release has been pushed back to February 2025, as it will be competing with Avowed, Civilization VII, Monster Hunter Wilds, and many other popular games. Indeed, 2025 is shaping up to be a very busy year, thanks to the anticipated release of Switch 2 and GTA VI.
In an attempt to give Assassin’s Creed Shadows a boost, Ubisoft plans to release it on day one on Steam, changing its previous strategy. It has also been confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will feature PS5 Pro enhancements.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is coming to PS5, Xbox, and PC on February 14th, and you can read our preview of the pre-test here. As for Ghost of Yotei, we don’t have a release date yet, but we expect it to be closer to the holidays. In the meantime, you can read about the best video games of 2024 here.
