The next-generation Apple Watch is headed straight to your wrist. During the recent iPhone 16 event, Apple also announced that the modern Apple Watch Series 10 is set to release on September 20, with pre-orders now available (see on Amazon). It has a few modern features, including sleep apnea detection. There’s also a slight refresh of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 that introduces a few modern ideas. Let’s take a look at what’s modern.

The latest Apple Watch model is the Series 10, which offers a few improvements over previous generations of the popular smartwatch. It’s thinner and has a slightly larger display (starting at 42mm, compared to 41mm on the Series 9). It has a wide-angle OLED display, meaning it looks clearer and brighter when viewed at an angle, which is quite common for watch users. It’s also available in a modern glossy black aluminum case, which looks pretty good (in addition to the silver and rose gold options). There are also three polished titanium case options to choose from, if those are more appealing.

On the software side, the Series 10 offers more detailed health monitoring, detecting potential sleep apnea issues when applicable. (This feature will also be available on the Apple Watch Series 9 and later on the Apple Watch Ultra 2.)

Here’s some good news for outdoor enthusiasts: the rugged Apple Watch Ultra 2 has a modern color. Inside, it’s the same watch, but on the outside, it has an eye-catching black titanium casing.

Honestly, the improvements in the Apple Watch Series 10 over the last generation models are relatively minor. If you don’t mind missing a millimeter of improvement here and there, you can find previous generations of the Apple Watch on sale.
