Apple is working on a movie based on Oregon Trail, the beloved educational computer game that has sparked generations of jokes and memes among gamers.

THR reports that the film, which is currently in early development, will be an action comedy with some Barbie-esque musical numbers. Will Speck and Josh Gordon are reportedly directing, with Kenny and Keith Lucas writing the script along with Max Reisman. As you might expect, the story will be about a 19th century covered train heading into Oregon’s Willamette Valley.

The Oregon Trail holds a special place in the hearts of generations of gamers.

The musical aspect gives an insight into what to expect and suggests that this will be quite an irreverent take on the historical adventure. The film includes songwriters and producers Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, who are best known for their work on La La Land.

The original game was created as a text-based adventure in 1971 and produced by the Minnesota Educational Computer Consortium since 1975. It has found a lasting place in pop culture as generations of American schoolchildren watched their heroes die from typhoid, dysentery, and other diseases. he was wandering around and hunting too many buffalo.

It looks like Oregon Trail is the latest classic game to get its own movie, following in the footsteps of Super Mario Bros. and other notable series. This trend had mixed success – Mario grossed over a billion dollars, but Borderlands was a box office flop.

The Oregon Trail doesn’t have a release date yet. You can find the rest of the biggest movies coming in 2024 here.
