At this rate, the most exorbitant PS Plus subscription tier is a difficult sell if you don’t like cloud gaming
PlayStation Plus offers three subscription tiers – Essential, Extra and Premium – and of all of them, the middle option seems to be the best value. As someone who appreciates retro games, especially the ability to play them easily on newfangled hardware, I thought I would primarily be a regular Premium subscriber. However, the initial wave of PS Plus Premium classics was tiny and since then, their rollout has been gradual, just as people feared.
Sony’s updates to its classic catalog have been disappointingly spotty, and whenever the company has added old-school titles from the PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable era, they usually haven’t been the most thrilling additions. To this day, the catalog doesn’t feature many of the fan-favorite games that defined these consoles like the original Crash Bandicoot AND Spyro the Dragon trilogies.
Right now, it looks like most of the value of Premium is tied to streaming-only PS3 classics and cloud gaming in general. Unfortunately for gamers like me who have never used PlayStation Now, it’s not much – but it could be a lot more enticing if the PS1, PS2 and PSP library did more.
Despite all this reluctance, I slowly but surely started enjoying the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack thanks to the N64, Sega Genesis and DLC expansions. I hope PS Plus Premium will speed this up as well; otherwise I will upgrade to an additional tier when my subscription ends.
As more games join the service, I’ll update this list with notes on any PS1 classics with trophies and games that can only be played on PS Plus Premium.

It’s worth noting that some beloved games are included in a separate Remasters list in PlayStation Plus Premium. Notable examples include exile, Trap 2, LocoRoco, LocoRoco 2, Toukiden: KiwamiAND Gravity rush. So while there are many different, newer remasters out there, there are some gems that fit the “classic” feel of the PSP and Vita era.
As for PS3 games, again they are only streamed on PS4 and PS5. There are far too many to list and combine – sorry! But Tokyo Jungle AND PixelJunk Monsters sure they rule.
